IMG_2842July 3, 1919 – July 18, 2017

Arlene was born on a small farm outside Monmouth, IL on July 3,1919 to Flossie and Lewis Pendarvis. Arlene had two older sisters, Gladys and Aletheo, both now long deceased.

Gladys married Charles Cunningham and had one child, Charles Carmen Cunningham. Aletheo married Clyde Gray and had four children, William, Leona, Rolland and Doris.

Arlene married Charles Pendarvis on December 31, 1952, but after five months they were in an automobile accident and Charles died instantly. Arlene remained a widow for the rest of her life and had no children.

Arlene outlived most of her social friends and immediate relatives. She is survived by two nieces and one nephew. They are Doris Meyer, niece of Van, Texas; Dolores (Dee) Million, niece-in-law, of Peoria IL; and Charles Carmen Cunningham, nephew, of Peoria.

Through Gladys and Aletheo, Arlene has a number of great nieces and nephews.

While she was in grade school, Arlene’s family gave up farming and moved to Peoria. Arlene graduated from Peoria High School in 1936. After high school, Arlene took to bookkeeping and accounting classes at a small college in Quincy, IL and landed a tax preparation job in Peoria. When her supervisor got transferred to Chicago, she too was offered and accepted the move. She has always told people it was her opportunity to move to the big city and see the world.

In the late 1940’s she met Charles Pendarvis (no relation), a CPA working in the Chicago area, and subsequently went to work for him. On December 31, 1952, they were married. Unfortunately, five months later on May 29, 1953, they were involved in an automobile accident and Charles was killed instantly. Arlene’s left ankle and foot were severely broken. Several operations enabled her to walk again, but her foot injuries gave her occasional trouble for the rest of her life. Arlene never remarried no had any children.

Arlene continued to work in the Chicago area has a tax preparer, bookkeeper and accountant for individuals, small companies and independent restaurants. In the late 1960’s she did obtain the position of office manager with a small company in Cedar Rapids, Michigan. Wanting to get back to Chicago in 1973 she obtained the position of office manager with Searle CT Systems, a startup subsidiary of G.D. Searle Pharmaceutical. She went on to work for the corporate G.D. Searle and Interad Associates. During these years, Arlene made a number of lifelong friends and acquaintances. A hard worker, she retired at the age of 86 holding the position of office manager with Payton Eyecare on North Ave, Forest Park.

Arlene was highly regarded by her fellow workers, who knew her as a thoroughly efficient financial administrator, office manager and a good person.

Arlene led a full life. She loved to travel, particularly to India, which she covered from Kashmir in the north to the Madras in the far South. While there she became acquainted with people of stature who became lifelong friends. Indonesia, Malaysia and Egypt were also some of her other destinations. Always adventurous she has sailed down the Nile from Cairo to Kenya!

Around 1976, Arlene purchased a house in Elmhurst and lived there until June 2014 when she moved to the senior retirement apartments at Bridgeway of Bensenville. While active, she enjoyed fine dining, good conversation, and attending classical concerts, plays and the occasional opera. She supported both the Chicago and Elmhurst Symphonies. As a worker in finance, Arlene also had an intense interest in Wall Street and the Stock Market.
